Gifted & Talented

About the GT Research Program

The Gifted and Talented Education Program provides comprehensive programming in grades K-12 with a focus on talent development.  Through rigorous courses and enrichment opportunities, the program enables all students to further develop their individual strengths and interests. In high school, the program consists of two major offerings: Independent Research (IR) and Intern/Mentor (IM). CHS also offers a 3rd choice, described below.

Overview of Independent Research

Independent Research is a college-level G/T elective course that empowers students to contribute to the larger community by applying, creating, and evaluating knowledge in a specialized area of study.  Students learn advanced-level research methodologies, college-level writing, and oral presentation skills as they formulate a research question in an area of interest; establish a knowledge base; develop, implement, and analyze an original primary research study; consult with professionals in the field; and communicate the results of their research through an authentic product for a designated audience.  This course is open to all grade levels but requires an application and teacher recommendations.  Students may take this course for more than one year.

Overview of Intern/Mentor

Intern/Mentor is a college-level G/T elective course that empowers students to contribute to the larger community by applying, creating, and evaluating knowledge in a specialized area of study.  Students study off-campus with a professional mentor in a self-selected area of interest.  The G/T Resource Teacher facilitates classroom and internship experiences, including instruction in advanced-level research methodologies, college-level writing, and oral presentation.  At the mentor site, students apply the knowledge and skills they have learned in an authentic, professional environment.  Interested students complete an application and schedule an interview with the G/T Resource Teacher.  Placement is contingent upon the availability of mentors in the field of study.  Students may take this course for more than one year.

Intern/Mentor Application

Summer Science Research (STEM)

This option is currently only offered at CHS. The application process the same as I/M, and students’ class time is dedicated to individual work. Students must commit to working at a mentor site (lab, hospital, college campus, etc.) for the summer, and the majority of the research is done during the summer. Students will agree to participate in science competitions during the school year, and they will spend their time during the school year preparing.  This class requires a great deal of INDEPENDENCE, and it requires transportation to and from the internship site.
