Student Government Association sponsors an annual Jingle Bell Banquet for senior citizens living in fixed/low-income housing. Seniors are provided with bus transportation and invited to Centennial for a traditional turkey dinner. While they are at Centennial, they are treated to a performance by the drill team, given a scarf or other small token gift, and attend the Winter Spectacular. Our Centennial Speech and Debate Team participated in the BCFL/BUDL Speech Tournament at Dulaney High School on Saturday, November 12th. This was one of the largest tournaments ever held in Maryland and our team did extremely well! Two of our experienced Public Forum teams earned medals for their performance: Katie Gao and Polly Moser earned a silver medal and Amber Fang and Kristen Lee earned a bronze medal. Our novice Public Forum teams also made a great showing! The team of Daria Cara and Summer Shen won two out of three rounds in their competition. Our brand new team of Lauren Brown and Velina Chapoval also made a great start with two rounds decided by a tiebreaker and many positive comments!
We are so proud of our debaters and look forward to our next tournament on December 17th at Notre Dame Preparatory School in Baltimore!

CHS Key Club sponsored by Mrs. Katie Parker, collected over 100 letters written by students and sent a care package to our troops in Afghanistan. Carolyn Frommer was one of the organizers.
On Monday, November 28th we received a phone call from Aubrey D. Russell
1SG, USA First Sergeant, "Headhunters" TF Fighting Eagles from Bagram, Afghanistan (DSN 318 481 9729). They were overwhelmed by the support and had to personally call to express a big thank you to the students and the School for all of the support. Sergeant Russell is currently on his 8th deployment and has seen the difference between Soldiers having Support and not having support so, every letter made a difference. Sergeant Russell wanted the students and staff to know that they had a huge impact on the "Fighting Eagles.”
One of the Officers has taken his personal time to record their deployment on Facebook. It is not an official page, however, it gives family and friends an idea of what they see every day.
When searching Facebook "faces of the 2-1 fighting eagles"
Courtney Tse, is a member of the “Girl Up” Club at Centennial High School. During the month of December, the club will be collecting hygiene items and toiletries for Grassroots. A box collecting these items is in the front lobby.
César Coloón Montijo was a guest on Friday, December 2nd. César wrote "Viaje a la Casita"; a book that describes the impact the Casita de Chema, or Ricón Criollo has had in the preservation of the cultural identity of the Puerto Ricans in New York as well as in the development of Plena in the diaspora. He is a doctoral student of ethnomusicology at Columbia University where he also teaches.
Our students from Spanish 4 and 5 have been reading and discussing his book as they relate it to the Cultural Identity Unit. There was a Questions/ Answers session after the presentation.

This year's competition will take place on April 1, 2017 at Centennial High School and registration is now open at: http://blueoceancompetition.org/register.
