Almost, Maine: a real romantic comedy opens

November 16-19 at Centennial HS

“A higher-concept and more clever version of Hollywood hits like ‘Love Actually’ and ‘Valentine’s Day’.”- The New York Times

Welcome to Almost, Maine, the way life should be! One cold, clear Friday night in the middle of winter, while the northern lights hover in the sky above, Almost’s residents find themselves falling in and out of love in the strangest ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. Love is lost, found, and confounded. And life for the people of Almost, Maine will never be the same. The show runs November 16-18 at 7pm and November 19 at 2pm.

Almost, Maine was developed at the Cape Cod Theater Project in 2002, and received its world premiere at Portland Stage Company, where it broke box office records and garnered critical acclaim. Almost, Maine opened Off Broadway in the winter of 2005 at the Daryl Roth Theatre. To date, Almost, Maine has been produced by over 3000 theater companies in the United States (and by over twenty companies internationally) making it one of the most frequently produced plays of the past decade.

The cast includes Ethan Kinstler, Christina Dee,  Sydney Grossman, Fayyaz Zaidi

Kieran Newell, Gillian Rossbach, Lacey Gelfand, Caroline Pekrul, Ben Roseman, Vaishnavi Mahalingham, Andrew Lee, Sabrina Ochoa,  Allison Brown, Matthew Sorak, Abby Zoller-Gritz, Casey Stratton, Ed Luiggi, Blair Bryant, and Noah Katz. Wingspan reporter Reem Hashmi said,

“The Centennial Speech and Debate Club is the place to be if you enjoy participating in group discussions, love an argument, thrive on controversy, or just need a place to voice your opinion. This club splits into two separate groups: speech and debate. The creatively driven speech group focuses more on humorous interpretations, poetry and prose, and original oratory, whereas the debate group is research-centered and analytical. Meetings are held every Wednesday in Room 412 sponsored by Ms. Flynn. The club’s team will be participating at local speech and debate tournaments at the following locations/times:

Tournament 1 – 10/21 at Marriotts Ridge High School

  Tournament 2 – 11/11 at Loyola-Blakefield School

Tournament 3 – 11/18 at Arundel High School

The public forum debate-style competition, is known for analyzing resolutions that are "ripped from the headlines." Their current debatable topic is centered on whether the deployment of anti-missile systems is beneficial for South Korea. Co-President Katie Gao said, “We started the team as sophomores, so it's been going three years strong… Being good at public speaking is not required, after all; that's what we're here for.  We're also hoping to host our own tournament at Centennial this January, which would be a great experience.”The Speech and Debate Club Co-Presidents are Katie Gao and Polly Moser, Vice President is Amber Fang, and Secretary is Kristen Lee.”

Salvation Army will be holding its annual Autumn Canned Food Drive from October 30th - November 17th. All unexpired, non-perishable goods will be accepted, and will go to local Howard County families.

First period classes will compete against each other to collect the most non-perishable goods possible. ARL students can leave their donations in the Front Office. We greatly appreciate it if you regularly mention the drive to your students. Healthy competition leads to more donations for us! The two first period classes that collect the greatest number of goods will win a Dunkin' Donuts party.

The club has already started to distribute boxes that store donations to first period classes as of Wednesday, October 18th. Box distribution will again occur on Wednesday, October 25th.  If you are not in your classroom next Wednesday afternoon, members will leave your box outside of your door.  Please bring the box into your classroom ASAP.
