On February 24th, 2018, Centennial's Girl Up Club hosted their 2nd Annual Leadership Summit! It was an inspiring event, with speakers from the Howard County Commission of Women, HopeWorks of Howard County, the Howard Tech Council, Planned Parenthood, the Maryland House of Delegates, and representatives from the International Girl Up organization. The event brought students from all over Maryland together to learn about issues affecting girls worldwide, discuss women's rights, and get involved in the Girl Up community. All proceeds from the event were donated to the official Girl Up organization, to benefit women and girls all across the world. Congratulations to board members Julie Wang, Polly Moser, Nicole Meister, Charissa Zhu, Samyukta Rao, Emily Addalia, Joyce Zhang, and Anne Vicari for a job well done!
Congratulations…CHS Science Olympiad placed first at the Regional Competition held at UMD! Congrats to everyone for their hard work and dedication! On to States!
On Saturday, February 24th, the Centennial High School National Math Honor Society hosted its third annual Mu Alpha Theta Math Tournament for middle and high schoolers across Howard County. Students completed an individual test and a timed, short-answer round in three categories: Algebra 1 and Geometry, Algebra 2 and Precalculus, and Calculus AB/BC. In an exciting countdown round, students competed head-to-head in a fast-paced setting. Centennial’s own Steppan Konoplev won first place both overall and in the countdown round for the Calculus level! This event was organized by the National Math Honor Society Tournament Chairs, Deanna Yi, Michael Harris, and Srija Makkapati, and all NMHS members helped out to make our tournament a success!
The reigning county and circuit champions, Centennial’s Mock Trial team is off to a winning start this season. We have won our first three trials and will face off against Glenelg High School next Tuesday. Mock on, Eagles!
Hope everyone had an opportunity to attend “Know Your Planet” on Thursday…the students had amazing projects!
MARCH 14TH IS PI DAY
Please join the CHS community for PI DAY on March 14th as we raise money for GRASSROOTS, our local crisis intervention and homeless shelter. We are encouraging every CHS student to bring $3.14 to school on March 14th to donate during MATH classes.
It takes $2111 per day to run Grassroots. If we raise enough money, CHS can "buy" a day of services. We plan to buy March 29th which is ONE CENTENNIAL DAY!!!
On Pi Day, March 14th, we will show a video during the morning announcements which details the ongoing crisis support offered through Grassroots. Please help us by advertising flyers that teachers will find in mailboxes, and encouraging students to donate during math classes or lunch shifts. See Katie Grimm & the Math Team with questions!
Students throughout the country have mobilized to speak out against gun violence in the wake of the recent shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Part of this effort includes a walkout advertised by the Women's March Youth Empower Movement. Some students at Centennial High School have expressed an interest in participating in this national event. Therefore, students may choose to participate in a voluntary walkout supporting gun control on March 14, 2018 at 10 AM for 17 minutes. Students will be located in a safe and designated area. They will leave and return to class appropriately, there will be no penalty for walking out.
In preparation for the walkout, interested students are also welcome to make posters on March 7th during Eagle Time. There is no obligation to attend the poster-making event if you plan on participating in the walkout.
Both events are completely voluntary. Civil discourse on all sides of the gun debate will be encouraged so that our community can model behavior worthy of good citizenship.
The "Zaching Against Cancer March Madness Basketball Tournament" is about to begin! Students form three person teams and compete in a "March Madness" style tournament during Eagle Time in the month of March. All proceeds go to the Zaching Against Cancer Foundation to honor a former Centennial student. We hope to have plenty of students at the games to show their support!
Wind Ensemble students on Wednesday, March 14th from 8AM-1:30PM will be recording in the UMBC Concert Hall as part of their audition portfolio for an international music education conference held in Chicago.
On the 20th February, 3 senior PLTW Engineering students were invited to Northrup Grumman along with only two other schools, to participate in a bike-build event. Specially designed and manufactured bikes were assembled for 4 special needs students and PLTW students had the opportunity to interact with Northrup Grumman engineers and technicians as they discussed design criteria and then quality assessed the assembled bikes.
The CHS engineering students also enjoyed the chance to compete in the Northrup Grumman "engineering wars" against teams of NGC engineers. Although placing 3rd in the first round, our team chose to forgo a test and immediately went live the second round which dropped us down to 7th. Not a bad effort considering the other teams consisted of professional engineers.
A Centennial grad was instrumental in organizing the above. Another Centennial grad, now also at NGC, will be organizing further activities for our engineering students where they will bring presentations and activities to the school. We're hoping to organize an in-school field trip when that occurs. One last point of note ... another CHS grad just landed a job at APL. Go Eagles!
The participating PLTW students now have the opportunity to be part of the bike handover to the special needs students at a special event on the 14th March.
Our junior and senior PLTW engineering students will be visiting Northrup Grumman facilities on the 21st March, where if clearances permit, they may get to see some of the work being done on special cryogenics projects.
Please keep our students safe and follow the rules:
The front door is the only entrance point for all visitors.
The office staff will ask you how they can help you and your purpose for visiting.
All visitors will walk directly to the front office with their identification.
Each visitor will have their ID checked and sign in on LobbyGuard.
A visitor’s sticker will be given to all visitors.
Any visitor in our building without a sticker will be escorted directly back to the office by a staff member
The Boys Basketball game for the Regionals final will be Saturday, March 3rd at 3pm (Gates open at 2pm) at Stephen Decatur High School. Go Eagles!
Have a great weekend.
