EAGLES NEST

January 18, 2019

From the Principal’s Desk…

Quick notes:

  • In last Friday’s letter, I used the incorrect unit of measure in reference to acceptable levels of lead in the water. The correct unit is ppb (parts per billion). Thanks and appreciation to the parent who noticed and let me know. The online version of the letter on our website is corrected.
  • As we weather the height of the winter season, please be aware the last day of school is a moving target. We will be amending our calendars to reflect the adjustments, but it would be best if you were to commit the last possible day of the year to memory and make summer plans accordingly. The last planned inclement weather makeup day is June 21, 2019.
  • You are being given the gift of time! Due to the weather related schedule adjustments and intermittent access to Synergy, the Central Office is extending the due date for entering schedule requests to Tuesday, January 22. However, there is no reason you can’t get this done early. Please and thank you!
  • Due to the holiday on Monday, there will be no Week at a Glance e-mail on Sunday. We’ve included it below for your convenience.
  • Finally, from Officer Carneal:
    • Make smart decisions.
    • If you’re an experienced driver, make sure you have a parent/guardian with you.
    • Give yourself more time to get where you’re going.
    • Leave additional space between your vehicle and other drivers.
    • If there is a snow emergency plan in effect, do not go out: stay home.

On that note, be safe out there Eagles,

Dillon

CELEBRATE CENTENNIAL:

Our Allied Bowling Team won the county championship this week! Outstanding!

Congrats to our It's Academic Team. Of the 32 teams participating, the Centennial A team came in 1st place for the 7th time in the last 8 years. Congratulations to Adam Knox (captain and junior), Ashwin Iyer (junior), Tobias Moser (junior) and Anthony Duan (sophomore) for being the only team going undefeated after 9 matches, 4 of which were single elimination matches in the playoffs. Four of our 6 teams made into the playoff round of 16, the A, B, C, and E team. Great job, It’s Ac!

Congratulations! On behalf of the College Board’s Advanced Placement Program® and Project Lead The Way, it is our pleasure to announce that Aneesha Ashtaputre, Nicole Attram and Anshu Saini have earned the AP + PLTW Student Achievement in Engineering recognition.  This achievement signals to colleges, universities, and companies that a student is ready for and interested in advanced studies and a career in the STEM disciplines.

Please welcome the nineteen Centennial High School students that have been accepted into the National Technical Honor Society.  The National Technical Honor Society is an honor society for outstanding career and technical students.  This year's students are from the Project Lead The Way Engineering Academy ( Aneesha Ashtaputre, Harun Gopal, Hamza Ali, Meher Bhamra, Jordan Carton, Matthew Demme, Tae Wan Kim, Peter Krawczyk, Rachael Lou,  Manu Matthew, Simone Sabnis and Anshuman Saini), Computer Science Academy ( Meenakshi Adiyodi, Edward Du, Tausif Khan and Ere Oh) and the Applications and Research Laboratory ( Freya Archuleta, Alana Germoth, and Vrinda Thalliyal). NTHS members must meet national and local membership standards and demonstrate scholastic achievement, skill development, leadership, honesty, responsibility, and complete service hours. All NTHS have agreed to help peers in their respective fields of study.

EAGLE NEWS

CHS Speech and Debate

Centennial High School will be hosting a Speech and Debate Meet for the Baltimore Catholic Forensic League on January 26, 2019. This is the only meet Howard County is hosting this season and we are excited to have teams from all around the region compete in various speech and debate events.

The CHS Speech and Debate team would appreciate any support you can provide as we have to provide food for the approximately 100 volunteer judges.  If you would like to sign up to contribute, you can or sign up on our sign up genius www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0D4CA4AB2EA02-chsbcsf or email Ting-Yi Huang (tingyi.huang@gmail.com) directly.

If you are interested in judging a Speech or Debate event (no experience necessary!), we always need extra judges. The Public Forum topic this month is Resolved: The United States federal government should prioritize reducing the federal debt over promoting economic growth. If you would like to judge, please contact Michelle Flynn (michelle_flynn@hcpss.org).

Thank you for your continued support of our team!
