EAGLES NEST
May 31, 2019
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Community Members:
What an amazing week! Thanks to all of our Eagle Family who came out to celebrate our graduating seniors this week at Merriweather Post. If you weren’t able to be there in person, the event was recorded and you can watch it online. We were very fortunate to have fair weather for the event; not everyone was as fortunate.
During this season of severe weather, I want to take a second to review emergency procedures* for events that occur outside of the school day:
Students and staff on campus outside of regular school hours, when the building is accessible, should find an interior space to shelter in place. The space should be away from doors and windows when possible.
If the building is not accessible, get into a vehicle, turn the car on (in order to activate airbags), and buckle your seatbelt. Put your head down below the windows and cover your head with your hands and a blanket, coat, or other cushion.
If there is no car or shelter, try to find a ditch or area lower than the ground and lie down. You are safer in a low, flat location than under a bridge or highway overpass.
If school staff are present, and call for a Shelter in Place, please be aware we will not release any students in our care until the threat has passed.
Parents who arrive to pick up students during an emergency are welcome to seek shelter with us if you deem it safe to exit your vehicle ad make your way into the building.
As we turn the corner from May into June and the final days of the 2018-2019 school year, I need to very briefly address student attendance. The rate at which students have been absent this year has been concerning. In fact, our overall attendance rate has the very real potential of negatively impacting our state school rating. Please be reminded guardians may keep students out of school for no more than three discretionary days per year (dates over which you have control). For seniors, be aware this does apply to college visit days. Anything beyond three days may be marked as unexcused. Students who miss school for unlawful reasons may not be permitted to makeup missed work, thereby impacting their course grades. Students who miss final exams are not permitted to take them in advance of the test administration date. All make-up exams must be completed before the start of the 2019-2020 school year. Arrangements are to be made with teachers and scheduled through the front office.
As your family makes plans for next summer - as I know many of us do far in advance - it is advisable that you do not book flights or vacation rentals until after the last POSSIBLE school day. Next year, that date is Monday, June 22, 2020. In point of fact, if we exceed all pre-scheduled make-up days, it is very possible the state will require school be in session for additional dates during that week. So, I strongly recommend you avoid making plans until the weekend of June 27, 2020.
Wishing you a safe weekend,
Cindy Dillon

Open positions include Fundraising Chair, Test Prep Chair, and Awards/Scholarship Chair. This is an excellent opportunity for parents to get involved and help make Centennial a great place for our kids to learn, socialize and grow. No experience is necessary and positions can be “shared” by two people. Please contact Jeff George (jefgeo@icloud.com) by May 30, 2019 to express interest and obtain more details.
