Navigating the College Admissions Process
Presented by Bailey Jackelen, Assistant Director of Admissions, Johns Hopkins University
Preparing for the college application and admissions process can be a really exciting time for students—a time to explore their interests, think about their future and begin to take ownership of their life plans. It can also be a stressful time not just for them but their entire families. In this session, discover how to prioritize the things that can best impact the process, focusing conversations and energy on the things that matter
most. We’ll review important steps for preparation, key conversations to have as a family, and the best ways to prepare for the outcomes.
Bailey Jackelen is an Assistant Director of Admissions in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at Johns Hopkins University. An experienced admissions officer, she will present on the college search and selective admissions process.

Make-Up Picture Day
Make-Up picture day is Monday, October 28. If you did not get your picture taken in September, please stop by the front office to pick up an order form. Winter Sports Registration
Thursday, November 7th; 4:00-5:30PM, in the CHS Cafeteria
All Students interested in trying out for a Winter Sport at Centennial High School are urged to attend our Winter Sports Sign-up Night on Thursday, November 7th, 2019, from 4:00-5:30PM in the CHS Cafeteria. Paperwork WILL NOT be collected prior to this date.
Please bring with you the following Eligibility Paperwork to our Sports Sign-Up Night: (Bold indicates forms can be downloaded at chs.hcpss.org); Students who participated in a Fall sport this year need to turn in a new Parent Permission form, a recent BGE Bill and meet the Academic Eligibility requirements outlined below:
1. Pre-Participation Physical Examination (dated on/after April 1, 2019);
2. Sudden Cardiac Arrest Acknowledgement Form (Parent/Guardian AND Student Athlete Must Sign);
3. Parent Permission Form;
4. Photocopy of their Birth Certificate (only if this is their first time participating in a sport at CHS);
5. Students MUST meet the HCPSS Academic Eligibility Requirements of no more than ONE “E” grade, AND a Minimum GPA of 2.0 or better on their 1ST Quarter report Card in order to be Academically Eligible to participate in Winter Sports try-outs.
6. Residency Verification in the form of a RECENT (dated October, 2019 or later) BGE Bill, Water Bill or landline phone bill - required each of the three athletic seasons;
Winter Sports try-outs begin Friday, November 15th, 2019. Students MUST meet ALL the Eligibility Participation requirements above and hand in all necessary paperwork on November 7th OR at the first try-out session on November 15th, in order to participate in Winter Sports try-outs.
Students MUST be in attendance for Try-outs beginning November 15th thru the entire try-out period in order to be considered for the team. Parents/Guardians, please schedule your Holiday breaks with this start date in mind.

CHS Fall Production of SENSE and Sensibility
If you thought you had any sense of the classic Jane Austen novel , think again. This won’t be just any show.
Centennial High School is proud to present Sense and Sensibility by Kate Hamill, based on the novel by Jane Austen. Show times are November 14-16 at 7:00 pm and November 17 at 2:00 pm.
When their father dies, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood are sent to live with their mother and sister in a cottage in the county. There, they meet Willoughby — a dashing and charming young man who catches the fancy of Miss Marianne. But when Colonel Brandon, an elderly friend, uncovers a dark truth, the Dashwood sisters will be left to their senses and their sensibility to discover what lies beneath all the gossip.
AP Exams - Registration Update
Online AP Exam Registration Open through November 8
The registration period for the 2020 AP Exams has begun. Students will register for exams using their AP Portal account, College Board AP Classroom Portal, https://account.collegeboard.org. Invoices will be distributed to students in class once they confirm their exam registration in the portal. Registration is complete once a signed copy of the invoice is submitted with payment to the Bookkeeper’s office. New invoices will be printed and given to teachers every Monday and Tuesday between now and 11/15.
Normal registration will end on 11/15. The cost per exam will be $94, due upon registration via our school online payment service. Late registration will begin on 11/16 and end on 3/13 and cost an additional $40 per exam ($134). NO REGISTRATIONS CAN BE ACCEPTED AFTER March 13th. After November 8, paper registration forms and checks payable to Centennial High School must be submitted to Mrs. Covington. College Board will assess a late fee of $40 for registration after November 15.
Students who receive Free and Reduced Meals (FARMs) qualify for AP exam fee reductions.
Regularly monitoring your child’s progress
With the changes to the recently revised Board of Education Policy 8020 Grading and Reporting: Middle and High School, middle and high schools no longer will distribute interims. In lieu of interims, secondary students and parents/guardians are encouraged to regularly monitor progress via the gradebook in HCPSS Connect - Canvas. Elementary school teachers do not use Canvas for grading, and will continue to distribute interims.
Middle/high school students and parents can use the directions below to access current course assignment scores and grade averages.
Accessing Progress Grades in Canvas
To access grades in Canvas:
1. Log in to HCPSS Connect with the email address you provided in Family File.
2. Select the Canvas (Gradebook) tab on the left side of the screen and select the Canvas link in the middle of the page.
3. In Canvas, navigate to the Grade Overview page by selecting the Grades icon on the dark grey navigation bar or select the View Grades button at the bottom of the Coming Up/To Do list on the right side of the screen. The Grade Overview page will show the current averages for each of your middle or high school children’s courses.
4. Select a course name to view the individual assignment scores for that course.
Grades can also be viewed in the Canvas Parent mobile app for iOS or Android. See the guide linked below for more information.
Any questions regarding assignment scores or current course averages should be directed to that course teacher. If help is needed to view the information due to a technical or access issue contact Student Services at 410-313-2857.

Congratulations to seniors, Lexie Fang, Sydney McNeil and Olivia Wang, for being chosen to represent Centennial High School in this year's first ever All County Dance Performance Ensemble! The ensemble will include dancers from each of the county's twelve high schools and will work with choreographer, Nathaniel Hunt, in preparation of their debut performance at the upcoming Howard County Dance Festival.

STEM of Many Colors
"STEM of Many Colors" will be held at Wilde Lake High School on Friday, November 1, noon--3pm as part of the month-long Maryland STEM Festival. The event will be organized like a career fair, with minority professionals manning tables to talk about their careers in fields related to science, technology, engineering & math. Additionally, there will be a Career Panel and a workshop on applying to college, specifically geared to minority students. The first 250 students in attendance will receive cinch bags.

Save the date. Dispose of Old EpiPens, Medication and More: Howard County’s next convenient drive-thru medication and “sharps” (needles, syringes and EpiPens) collection will be held on Saturday, October 26 between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. in the Wilde Lake Village Center parking lot. HC DrugFree and the Howard County Police urge all families to clean out unwanted or expired over-the-counter and prescription medications and sharps.
