It’s Spring Athletic Orientation Program - Monday, March 9th, 6:00PM

The Centennial High School Athletic Department will conduct its Spring Athletic Orientation Program for Parents/Guardians on Monday evening, March 9th,  starting promptly at 6:00PM. Each JV and Varsity Spring Head Coach will be introduced and conduct their own specific Parent/Guardian break-out meeting pertaining to their sport immediately following the main presentation, in the rooms listed below. We hope to see you there for this very important meeting.

Food for the Soul

The Delta Scholars and Black Student Union invite the entire Centennial High School community to join in our observation of Black History Month at the sixth annual Food for the Soul, Words for the Heart!  It is an evening of cultural cuisine, historical artifacts, amazing art, intriguing performances and prizes that you do not want to miss this. The event is on Friday, February 21st at 6pm in the Cafeteria.

Student Parking

At this time, we have issued all student parking passes for this school year.  There are no additional spaces for students for the remainder of the year. If you student would like to put their name on a waiting list, they can stop by the front office. 

 

AP Exams - Registration Update

Late registration will begin on 11/16 and end on 3/13 and cost an additional $40 per exam ($134). NO REGISTRATIONS CAN BE ACCEPTED AFTER March 13th. Restorative Justice in Education: A Conversation with Dr. Kathy Evans

On March 23, 2020, the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, in conjunction with HCEA and the Restorative Justice Partnership, will be hosting conversation and book signing with Kathy Evans, one of the co-authors of The Little Book of Restorative Justice in Education.

2020 Yom Hashoah Essay Contest - 75 Years Later: Our Stories of Survival, Loss, and Liberation

Who’s Eligible:

All Howard County middle school and high school students

Purpose of the Essay Contest:

The Howard County Holocaust Remembrance Committee seeks to remember the Holocaust by learning from the events that took place in Europe from 1933 to 1945. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camps. The essay provides students an opportunity for reflection, and to consider how the atrocities of the Holocaust continue to impact us today. The hope is that this will highlight the importance of standing up against hateful actions to prevent terrible events from happening again in the future.

There will be a first and second place prize awarded at the middle school level, and similarly at the high school level. First Prize winners will each receive $100 and Second Prize winners will each receive $50.

Essay Background and Topic:

On April 15, 1945, General Dwight D. Eisenhower spoke these words after he saw the newly liberated camps:

“The things I saw beggar description...the visual evidence and the verbal testimony of starvation, cruelty, and bestiality were...overpowering...I made the visit deliberately in order to be in a position to give first-hand evidence of these things if ever, in the future there develops a tendency to charge these allegations merely to “propaganda.”

In thinking about this quote, share your responses to the following questions. Your discussion should be written in the form of an essay.

1.How do you think General Eisenhower felt as he spoke these words?

2.Why do you feel it was important to share what he saw with the world?

3.What impact did reading this quote, or learning about the Holocaust in general, have on you?

Students who are interested in learning more about this topic are encouraged to visit the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s online collection of digital resources, at https://collections.ushmm.org/search/.

The Basic Things to Know:

•Essay should be 300-500 words and no more than 2 typed pages.

•Essay should be submitted by email no later than March 15, 2020.

•Winners will be notified by March 31, 2020.

•Essay should be submitted by email to YomHaShoahEssayContest@gmail.com. Please type either Middle School or High School in the subject line. Include a title page with your name, school name, grade, contact phone number and/or email address.

Judging:

Essays will be judged by Howard County Holocaust Remembrance Committee members and Howard County teachers, using a 6-point rubric that will incorporate common core standards.

 

Leadership U Class of 2020

Don’t miss this last chance – to come to a Leadership U Information Session!!  Give your sophomore the opportunity to have an experience that will be a highlight of his or her high school career.  Come hear from LU grads and learn what the program is all about. High School Summer Comedy Intensive - Session 1: July 6-10 Session 2: July 13-17           

Join us for comedy training from professional comedians and master teachers from Baltimore and Washington!  

Training will focus on the following areas:

Improvisation

Sketch comedy writing

Comedic scene study

Stand-up routine creation and performance

 Though there is a focus on the basics, students with prior experience will find an opportunity to strengthen and flex their comedy muscles.

Location: Mt Hebron High School on the stage and in theatre room.

Time: 9am-4pm 

Cost: $390 

Performance: Free show to the public on the Friday of the session intensive.

Research In Science and Engineering (RISE) Conference

CHS Parents, are your students interested in pursuing a career in a STEM related field? Would you like to get a leg up as to what they should be doing to prepare for such a career? Then get ready for RISE! The Science National Honor Society’s fourth annual Research In Science and Engineering (RISE) Conference is taking place on Wednesday, March 11, from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. at Centennial High School. Admission is free and food/refreshments will be provided.

 

Participants will hear from speakers in a variety of STEM fields, pursue internship opportunities, and listen to keynote speaker Chris Berry, President of Visionist, Inc., discuss his career path in the United States Intelligence community and how to successfully navigate a STEM career. Indian Cultural Association - Essay Contest for Students & Parents

Children & Parents often have a lot of feelings or thoughts to share with one another, but are not always able to. This essay contest is an opportunity for you to Speak up.

TOPIC:

“STUDENTS, if you could tell your parents anything, what would it be?”

“PARENTS, if you could tell your children anything, what would it be?”

Award: 1st Prize: $200, 2nd prize: $100. The name of the winners will be announced by the end of June 2019.

Who is eligible? All students enrolled in grades 6-12 in U.S. public, private and home schools in Howard County, Maryland.

Format? The essay should be 300-500 words. Entries must be typed, double-spaced and must be the participant’s original work.

How to Enter? Entries must be emailed to youth@icahoward.org with “Student/Parent Essay Contest” written in the subject line.

HC DrugFree Updates

1.  Free Parenting Classes - HC DrugFree and the State's Attorney's Office are offering another series of evidence-based, interactive parenting classes. Provides the families of children age 9-14 with the skills and knowledge to reduce the risk that their children will use drugs. Classes will be held on Tuesdays, March 10, 17, 24, and 31 from 5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Oakland Mills Middle School in Columbia. Parents are expected to attend all 4 classes. 2 . HC DrugFree’s Teen Advisory Council (TAC) will meet on Monday, March 16 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at The Barn/Teen Center in the Oakland Mills Village Center. TAC meets one Monday evening a month and is open to all Howard County high school students. Community service hours are available for all meetings and events. 3. Senior Week: Staying Safe in Ocean City Program - HC DrugFree, Ocean City Police and Ocean City Beach Patrol will return for this annual program. Held on Monday, March 30 at Atholton High School and Monday, April 27 at Howard High School. Free. Open to the public. Both programs will be at 7:00 p.m. in the school auditorium. 4.  Drive-Thru Medication and Sharps Collection - HC DrugFree's next drive-thru medication and sharps (needles, syringes and EpiPens) collection will be held on Saturday, April 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Wilde Lake Village Center parking lot. Bring all unwanted and expired over-the-counter and prescription medication. Free. Open to the public. No need to get out of your vehicle. Student and adult volunteers welcome. Community service hours available. Medication guarded and transported by the Howard County Police and the Drug Enforcement Administration.
