Course Registration/Selection for 2022-2023

Fri, 12/17/2021 - 8:50am

Course registration for the 2022-2023 school year will begin on December, 20th.  On either Friday, December 17th or Monday, December 20th during Social Studies classes, students watched the course registration video which outlined graduation requirements, the course registration and the Course Placement Review process, as well as explored academic options available to students. Please see the following links to the video and resources provided to support you and your student in completing the course registration process this year:

These resources are also available on the CHS website.

Once you and your student have made course selections, your student should access Synergy to input their selections beginning on Monday, December 20th.  Students must have a total of 7 credits and 3 alternate credits.  Please list your 3 alternates in priority order and do not duplicate any of your requests.  All course requests must be entered by January 18, 2022.

While completing the course registration process, please refer to the HCPSS Course Catalog for 2022-2023.  Students should refer to page 1 of the course catalog (Graduation Requirements), and pages iii and iv (Four Year High School Plan) near the back of the course catalog to help determine courses for next year.  Course descriptions are listed alphabetically by subject area in the course catalog. Refer to page 11 (General Information) of the course catalog for course level definitions.

We always encourage students to challenge themselves with Honors, GT, and AP courses where appropriate.  However, students should be aware that any AP level class is a college-level course, and very rigorous.  Students need to make deliberate decisions about how many GT/AP classes to take each year, as well as how much work they can handle.  Students should strive to create balance in order to reduce stress, while still choosing an academically rigorous schedule.   Please see the following document for more information: Student Scheduling Thinkabouts.

HCPSS in partnership with Howard Community College (HCC) offers the JumpStart program to high school students, where students can earn college credit, gain instruction for career possibilities, or earn an associates degree.  If your student is interested in taking a JumpStart course, please see the JumpStart program page for more information and follow these instructions to complete the necessary enrollment documentation through your HCPSS Connect account: JumpStart Guides.

If you have concerns or disagree with any of the course recommendations, please contact your child’s teacher or counselor.  If you are still not satisfied with the recommendation, parents/guardians may complete the Course Placement Review Form online through their HCPSS Connect account.  Please follow the instructions in the Course Placement Review Form Entry Guide to assist you with completing this form.

Counselors will meet with every student individually during their English class between January 25th and February 16th to discuss their selections for the 2022-2023 school year. Please contact your student’s counselor, if you have any questions about course selection.
