She’s the First:

We are an organization that promotes gender equality by providing scholarships to girls in low-income countries to go to school. The name "She's The First" refers to the girls themselves, as with our help, they are the first in their families to graduate high school. Our chapter at Centennial is currently sponsoring three girls: Roopa and Jayanthi in India, and Kimberly in Guatemala. This year we are also launching our first scholarship to a female senior graduate c/o 2018 who is the first in her family to accomplish an outstanding academic achievement. Female seniors of Centennial High School will be able to apply for this scholarship in February 2018, winner to be announced at CHS's 2018 senior award night. We are a chapter who strives to make a difference both at home and abroad. Our chapter is partnering with the Mary Kay Foundation, a USA brand that sells beauty products to raise money against domestic violence and cancer.

The Student Government Association hosted their annual Jingle Bell Banquet this past Wednesday.  Two buses were sent to five low-income senior housing locations.  The senior citizens were brought to Centennial to enjoy a traditional holiday turkey dinner where SGA and NHS students took their drink, dinner and dessert orders and waited on them.  SGA gave each senior a token gift, and they were escorted to the evening’s musical performance.  Many thanks to the music department for being so kind to let the Jingle Bell Banquet participants watch their performance and for loaning SGA the choir chairs to use for seating in the cafeteria.

Midterm Review Sheets for 9th Graders

All 9th grade courses will have a midterm review sheet available online no later than December 22nd. The link to these is available directly on our school webpage. Go to http://chs.hcpss.org/academics/resources and click "Midterm Review Packets." ONLY students have access to these via their active directory logins. Parents will not be able to access the review sheets without their child's active directory login. Please do not request access. Our Mid Term Mastery Parent Night is January 10th at 7pm.

On December 14th we had our annual school-wide Poetry Out Loud competition in the auditorium. Poetry Out Loud is a national poetry recitation where students select poems, classic and contemporary, from a database at poetryoutloud.org. The school competition involves two poems, and eight of our students recited their selections to be our school champion and represent the Centennial Eagles at Regionals in January. The eight students won their classroom competitions, so be sure to congratulate them. They are Sarah Smith, Emily Dahlgren, Lisa Li, Grace Rout, Sydney Grossman, Kieran Newell, Janice Cho, and Meena Aidyodi. It was a close competition, and the second runner-up is Sarah Smith, first runner-up is Sydney Grossman, and our 2017 Poetry Out Loud School Champion is Grace Rout. Congratulations to the three of you and all of the competitors for doing a great job bringing poetry to life. In attendance were several classes who showed the Centennial spirit in their support. The competition was mc’d by our National English Honor Society who, between recitations, shared with the audience interesting facts and insights on how poetry relates to their generation. A job well done all around.

Grace Rout will now move on to Regionals in Annapolis on January 13th, at the Annapolis Shakespeare Company from 1-3pm. The best of luck to Grace! Go Eagles!!
