From the Principal’s Desk…

The school system is excited to share with you JumpStart dual enrollment opportunities for the 2019-2020 school year. These options, in partnership with Howard Community College (HCC), are designed to provide students with the college experience while still in high school. Students will receive college credit while meeting high school graduation requirements.

Next school year, in additional to the existing flexible options available, your junior or senior can participate in a humanities or STEM course block scheduling opportunity through JumpStart dual enrollment at HCC. The course blocks will offer general education core courses that align with your student’s interests, as well as core high school graduation requirements, such as English and mathematics. On average, students can earn 12 college credits per semester through this option. A sample STEM course block layout can be viewed here and a sample liberal arts course block layout can be viewed here.

Participants will spend one period at their home school and take two to three classes each day on HCC’s Columbia campus. Students can take advantage of an optional shuttle, transporting them to and from their home school. This allows students to use school transportation back home or participate in after-school activities or sports.

Families interested in the JumpStart dual enrollment opportunities should get in touch with their high school counselor for more details. A family information session about these JumpStart Dual Enrollment opportunities will be held at HCC on February 19 from 5-6:30 p.m. in Duncan Hall, Room 100. Families can engage with both HCPSS and HCC staff to learn more about what is available for the 2019-2020 school year.
